There are a number of hybrid and online program options available to students interested in undertaking formal paralegal studies instruction in North Carolina, each of which offers something different and may be better suited to some than others.

1. Carteret Community College

There are two educational paths available to paralegal students on offer at Carteret Community College. The first is a two year Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Technology and the second is a twelve month Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Paralegal Technology that is offered to those who already hold a four year Bachelor's degree in another subject.

Both programs are approved by the American Bar Association and are traditional campus based offerings that offer a highly comprehensive overview of both the day to day work of a paralegal and important skills like advanced legal research and legal ethics.

Students are admitted to these programs based upon previous academic performance and must complete general credit courses in addition to their legal studies. In terms of tuition, it is charged on a sliding scale, with the lowest rates offered to in-state residents, for an average cost of $14,869 per year. Most students pay for their schooling via Federal financial aid.

2. Meredith College

For individuals who already have a bachelor's degree in a different subject but are interested in changing their career path to become paralegals, Meredith College offers a highly sought after paralegal certificate program. The American Bar Association and the North Carolina Bar Association have both approved it, making it the only paralegal school in the Triangle region of North Carolina to have earned such a distinction.

The full-time, hybrid online and on-campus curriculum provides a thorough overview of the paralegal profession as well as the legal, research, and ethical knowledge required on a daily basis. Students are also offered the opportunity to undertake a work experience assignment with a local law firm. In total the program takes a full school year, 12 months, to complete.

Admission requirements include having a BA and fulfilling other educational requirements. When a student is accepted, tuition is paid on a per-credit basis, and the costs vary depending on their living situation and location. 98% of students use traditional financial aid, which is offered to those who qualify, to pay for their education.

3. Pitt Community College

Pitt Community College offers students the chance to complete either a two year Associate in Applied Sciences Paralegal Technology degree or a twelve month post-baccalaureate diploma in Paralegal Studies, both of which are approved by the American Bar Association and the NC State Bar Association. They are delivered in a hybrid online, on campus format, with the mandatory on-campus classes available as daytime or evening classes. 

To enter the AAS program, students must hold a high school diploma or GED, while the post-baccalaureate diploma program is open to those who already hold a four year BA in a different field which was awarded by an accredited institution. While the legal portions of the programs are very similar, covering the basics needed to work as an entry level paralegal, AAS students will also need to complete a number of general studies classes to earn their degree.

The average cost of tuition in 2022 will be $6,710, depending on a student's financial situation, place of residence, and living arrangements. Most students use federal financial help to cover the cost of their education.

4. Central Piedmont Community College

Central Piedmont Community College offers two different ABA approved paths to a paralegal career. Individuals with at least a high school diploma or the equivalent are eligible to apply for the paralegal technology Associate in Applied Science degree, which can be completed in two years of hybrid on-campus and online study.

Those who have earned a bachelor's degree from an approved institution or university and have passed ENG 111 with a "C" or better are eligible for the paralegal technology post-baccalaureate diploma which can be completed in twelve months.

Both courses offer a comprehensive overview of the legal knowledge needed to work as an entry level paralegal with a special focus on legal research skills and legal ethics. Tuition is charged according to a student's income, residence and living situation, with the average cost for 2022 being $5,710. The vast majority of students make use of Federal financial aid to pay for their studies.

5. North Carolina State University Via Barbri CLS

North Carolina State offers a unique introductory course via online educators Barbri that, while not comprehensive, does offer a basic introduction to the paralegal field and may be an excellent way for those still unsure if it is the right path for them to make a final decision before undertaking further study or changing jobs and will award a professional Certificate in Paralegal Studies upon graduation.

This cash only online course is offered in two parts - Paralegal I and Paralegal II - and includes a series of live video lectures offered at weekends as well as self-paced online learning. It is designed to be completed in a maximum of 14 weeks - seven for each module - and enrollment is open to all. The full cost of the program - $ 1,989.00 - is due on enrollment and cannot be paid for using financial aid.

6. Wake Technical Community College

Adult learners at Wake Technical Community College have the option of earning a non credit Certificate in Paralegal Studies exclusively online, which can be finished in as little as six months of independent study. The National Association of Legal Assistants has approved the curriculum, which is open to candidates who are US citizens with a high school diploma or GED.

The course provides students with a thorough basic introduction to fundamental legal procedures and paralegal duties that should qualify them for an entry level position in a law firm setting.

The cost of this program cannot be covered by conventional financial aid because it does not grant credits. However, students are urged to contact the admissions office to explore what their potential personal costs may be as they often qualify for workforce grants and other aid to help pay for the program.
